Candy Cane Baby Outfits for Christmas

2013/11/06 by TaraMom

Themed Christmas outfits are an adorable way to dress your baby for the holiday season. Candy canes have long been associated with Christmas and are a delicious treat. But, did you know that this confection is also rich with symbolism?

According to some stories, candy canes were first created in the 1600’s in Europe as a way to keep children quiet during the Christmas church services. They were created to look like a shepherd’s staff so the children would be reminded of the shepherds who visited the infant Jesus. If you turn the candy cane upside down it looks like the letter ‘J’, another reference to Jesus.

Peppermint is used to flavor the candy and is often compared to another member of the mint family, Hyssop, which was used in the Old Testament for purification and sacrifice. Although the earliest candy canes were pure white, a symbol of purity and the virgin birth, later red stripes were added which symbolize God’s love.

From the late 1800’s and onward candy canes have been used to decorate Christmas trees and are often featured on greeting cards. From their colors to their symbolism they are richly entwined with the Christmas tradition.
