When shopping for winter coats for babies you need to take into consideration the age of your child and what kind of winter you expect.
For young babies up to a year a one-piece bunting style jumpsuit is a great option. With the exception of a few early starters, babies this age aren’t walking so you don’t need to worry about boots. Having an attached or fold-over foot is a great way to seal in warmth to protect your child from the cold.
If you live in a location without overly harsh winters then a fleece bunting suit is a great winter option and there are many cute styles that come with hoods that have ears (too cute!). If you’re carrying your baby around in an infant carrier then they will be getting some extra body heat from contact with you. If you’re baby is in a car seat or stroller, you could always cover them up with a blanket for extra warmth on a cold day.
For areas that experience very cold weather, then a winter snowsuit would be the better option for infants. Down-filled and microfiber snowsuits are great for insulating your child while repelling the elements.
If your baby is approaching toddler-hood then you may want to consider a stand alone jacket that you can then pair with either snow pants or waterproof rain pants as needed. Be sure to get a jacket that’s large enough to be layered, this way they can wear it through the winter and into the spring time. Also, toddlers are constantly moving and running around so buying something that can be layered is great to help prevent over-heating.
